Phrasal Verbs

Dear Students

As you continue to journey on the road in learning English, I want to tell you that you are doing a tremendous job! Thank you for your hard work and for your dedication.
There are three things that might make your story as successful:

1. Show up -- show up for every single class

2. Make upmake up the lessons you have had to skip because of illness or being too busy

3. Start upstart up an English club or a study group where you can practice your English on an daily basis

And...Don’t ever give up!
Dr. Carolyn Johnson

Here are the meaning of the phrasal verbs used by Dr. Carolyn Johnson in her encouraging message:
Show up - appear or become visible; make a showing
Make up - compensate, reconcile, create
Start up - the act or an instance of setting in operation or motion
Give up - to abandon (oneself) to a particular feeling, influence, or activity.
Now it's your turn to leave some sentences below using the new phrasal verbs yo have just learned!!

Hi Dr Carolyn Johnson

Thanks for your message. It was very interesting and important to me. For me show up, start up and don't give up are lessons that we should carry for all our life and come in from a very important person like you has a bigger weight.

THANKS THANKS
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Hey Daniel, Ana Paula, and Paulinha

For me - to SHOW UP - it means you SHOW UP for class even when you haven't done your homework, even when you are tired, even when you don't feel like it...even when you want to hang out with your friends instead of going to class.
To MAKE UP your work means when you are sick or have something unexpected that COMES UP, you MAKE UP the work. You can do that by GIVING UP watching television or STAYING UP a little later than normal to MAKE UP the work.
To START UP - mean start each day with a new determination to do your best. It's an attitude that must be within you - to start each day with a desire to do your best.
Lastly, don't ever GIVE UP. Every day you can practice your English - even if you are just listening to some music in ENglish. Your professor can tell you how he learned English - each day he practiced and practiced. He never GAVE UP.

Blessings on you all.

Carolyn
